“I’m Carolyn and My Magic is Myself.” - It’s International Women’s Day

March 8th is International Women’s Day and we’re celebrating the half a million girls and women Project Glimmer has served since 2010!  We’re also honoring Carolyn, an incredible young woman and foster youth from the Bronx, New York, who after attending Project Glimmer’s Work Your Magic, A Day of Empowerment, found her magic… Herself!

During her Day of Empowerment last summer at Select World NYC , Carolyn saw a magic in herself that she had never seen before through a photoshoot with professional makeup and styling.  “The event really helped increase my confidence and I realized my magic is myself. Because of this experience, I’m taking my career seriously and want to pursue work in the modeling or acting industry.”

Eight months later, we invited Carolyn, along with girls from Girls Inc NYC. back to the Select World studio gallery for a special tour of the Mirror | Mirror exhibition. They met with exhibiting artist Shona McAndrew, and attended a panel discussion about evolving beauty standards in the modern world.  Carolyn was invited to be one of the panelists and offered her views on beauty and how it has impacted her and the rest of the world, compelling her to feel inspired and empowered as a woman.

“I didn’t know I was this beautiful.... I didn’t know I could do this!”

— CAROLYN ON HOW THIS EXPERIENCE HAS MADE AN IMPACT

During the panel discussion Carolyn answered a number of questions, exposing her true inner beauty:

Q: What is beauty?

C: It’s something you’re born with, it’s inside of you.

Q: Who is beautiful?

C: Everybody is beautiful!

Q: When did you first see beauty?

C: It was when I first met my Grandmother.

In less than a year, Carolyn’s journey is an important reminder of what women are capable of when a community believes in them. So today, on International Women’s Day Project Glimmer challenges women all over the world to be bold, to be beautiful, to be you and to find your magic within!
