Ruggable, the first patented machine-washable rug brand, and recognized artist, illustrator, and model Monica Ahanonu, announced the launch of an all-new rug collection focused on empowerment and breaking the mold of traditional home decor. Inspired by accessible design and washable innovation — the core tenants of Ruggable — Ahanonu partners with Ruggable to bring her unique passion and artistic style into the home. The collection is her first foray into the home-design space and includes 8 pieces, inclusive of indoor and outdoor rugs.
Project Glimmer is grateful to receive a donation from Ruggable in connection with the collection from Monica Ahanonu. Monica Ahanonu answered some questions about her work and Project Glimmer:
Why was it important for you to donate to Project Glimmer as part of your partnership with Ruggable?
I want young girls to have access to resources that help them feel as confident as they can be as they figure out their unique passions and realize their full potential.
What is the inspiration behind the collection? How does this tie to your existing works of art?
My inspiration was thinking about color and how it affects your energy throughout the day by having it in your space. This ties into my existing work in that I am always playing around with color and shape even when doing portrait pieces or illustrations with characters, there is still a large focus on the colors and shape language in each piece. The compositions I created for Ruggable as well as my existing work feel like a dance where I’ve created choreography for the eye to follow.
Can you share any details on your art background and how you got started?
I would say my art background began when I had surgery on my feet the summer between eighth and ninth grade, and I had to sit in a wheelchair for about two months. I was used to being so active so I started teaching myself Photoshop and animation so that I could animate my gymnastics routines to pass the time. From there I went to study Animation & Digital Arts at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. After graduating, I began my career working at DreamWorks Animation as Production Assistant. After many hours outside of the day job, working to improve my art, I was hired as a full time artist at the studio. After a few years at DreamWorks Animation, I left to become a freelance illustrator and try out a lifestyle - the one I currently have - that contains more variety.
What are your career highlights/journey to success?
My career highlights have been getting my first internship at DreamWorks Animation, becoming an artist at DreamWorks Animation full time, illustrating my first book of portraits, being asked to illustrate a Google Doodle and this partnership with Ruggable.
The Ruggable X Monica Ahanonu collection is now available on their website.
